A black fine-line tattoo of concentric rings sits on the upper arm, with the word HAPPY in small capitals at the centre. Above the rings, the phrase WHAT TO FOCUS ON runs in small black capitals. The close crop shows a person in a black t-shirt against a pale background, with the ink in black and grey.

The card was still pinned above his workbench, written in his square capitals: WHAT TO FOCUS ON. Beneath it he had written one word in pencil, then rubbed it out so hard the card had gone thin. Dorothy could make out the hook of the H at the front and little else. She had spent forty-one years not asking what he meant.

She cut the round through the centre with the good saw, and the grain opened like a clock face. Near the middle the rings ran wide and fat, the summer they had been married, the summer of the flood when the lane was a river. She ran her thumb along them slowly. Then she found a pale patch where the wood had gone soft, and she understood the word he had rubbed out.

She didn't write it down. She sanded the top until the centre shone, unpinned the card, and set it face down in the sawdust. The table would go to the church hall for the harvest supper with nothing on it but the rings.
