Studio Ghibli characters cluster on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a crowd of cartoon characters, including a white masked spirit with red markings at the top, a large round creature with a wide grin, and many small soot-like sprites. The linework is bold black outline with solid black fills behind the figures, and small red accents on the mask. The design wraps around the outer upper arm and fills the frame, with the characters packed closely together.

Day three at Hollins Row, forty years of junk and the soot has got into everything. Mum always swore the little black sprites were only dust that had got ideas. She used to sweep them into the dustpan with a tea towel over her hand so they couldn't climb her wrist. I thought she was making it up to keep me from touching the loft hatch.

On Wednesday the grey masked man stood in the hallway, silent as a coat on a peg, holding out a Quality Street tin with both hands. I didn't ask him in. He didn't need asking. Inside the tin were pale seed-heads with faces, rattling like loose teeth. Dad grew them along the back fence every spring and never once told anyone where the seeds came from. Kath from next door says he got them off a man who sold garden gnomes at the Otley market, but Kath says a lot of things.

By dusk the skip was full and the sprites were climbing the gate in neat black lines. Then a cat with too many legs pulled up at the kerb, its eyes lit like a pair of paraffin lamps. No bus has stopped on Hollins Row in thirty years. The big round creature in the back seat grinned at me and patted the empty bench beside him, the way Dad used to pat the sofa when the football was on. I stood there with the tin under my arm and the back door wide open behind me.

I got on. I left the keys on the hall table for the estate agent, and the sprites went up the steps ahead of me, carrying their small grey lamps.
