Stylised cat head in black line design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a cat's head in profile, turned upwards and to the left, with the ear, eye, nose and whiskers suggested by bold black shapes. The linework is made of tapering, flowing strokes that build the fur into sharp, swept patterns, with the solid black areas giving a strong, graphic contrast. The design is centred on a plain cream background with no other elements.

The cat would not come down from the bell rope. Every morning at Saint Ebba's the bell was rung for matins, and every morning the grey cat climbed the rope to the beam and sat there with his face turned up, looking out over the fens as though listening for something the monks could not hear. Brother Wulfric said it was a sign. Brother Osric said it was a cat.

In the hard winter of the flooding, the eel-men came up the causeway with their boats empty and their children thin. The prior ordered the stores counted and the bread cut thinner. The cat ignored all of it and kept to his beam. One dawn he came down the rope fast, claws in Osric's sleeve, and went out through the gap under the door toward the water.

The monks followed him because there was nothing else to do. He led them along the causeway to a sunken cart at the edge of the reed beds, where a family's last sacks had gone under the ice. They hauled out the flour, wet and blackened at the edges, and it was enough to carry the village to thaw.

The prior wrote in the house book that the cat had shown the way. Nobody thought to write his name, so the eel-men called him Ferryman. When the monks dug him a grave beneath the bell tower, they set the stone facing the water, so he could go on watching the fen as he always had.
