The cat was already sitting on the stile when you came up through the bracken, as if it had been waiting since the bells in Hollin Cross rang noon. It looked at you with the two eyes it kept for ordinary business, and then with the third, the one set high above its nose, which never blinked.

Mrs Abernethy at the mill had warned you not to meet it face on. Her husband had met it the spring the beck flooded, and he came down off the fell knowing which of the ewes would not see April. Nobody in the village trusted a cat with three eyes, though nobody could say which of the three was the wrong one. Your nephew had not come back from the top pasture, and the mist was rolling off Carrick like wet wool, so you asked the thing, feeling foolish, which way he had gone.
It stood, shook out its whiskers and walked into the heather without looking back. Only when you followed did you see that its tail had gone straight up, pointing like a finger at a single grey gap in the rocks where no path had any right to be.
You found the boy on a stone with his cap in his lap, a mile from where he ought to have been. The cat was washing its face on the wall beside him and did not look up. On the way down he asked whether it had been counting them. You told him it had only ever been counting the rest of us.
