Stylised dragon line drawing design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single-line drawing of a stylised dragon head in profile, with a long curving neck and flowing, tapering strands that sweep up and down the page. A small open circle and a short curl sit below the main body, and a faint horizontal guideline crosses the lower centre. The artwork uses thin, mostly unshaded black lines on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, you will laugh at me, but the thing in Hollin Wood has been back. Mrs Pardoe swears she saw it come down over the wall at dusk, neck raised like a heron's, its long grey hair streaming behind it as if the brambles had combed it. I went up with the lamp myself on Tuesday and found nothing but the charcoal burners' black ring and a stone the size of a cartwheel hub, worn flat on top, that nobody in the village remembers setting there.

I should say I did not believe her until I sat beside that stone. The wind came up the valley and bent every ash tree the same way, and the old ivy lifted from the trunks in long curls, exactly as Mrs Pardoe described. Then a branch clattered in the dark and something turned its head towards me, slow as a question. I found I had my palm flat on the stone, and it was warm, as if something had lain on it all afternoon.

I came back down with my heart knocking. Father would say I am my mother's daughter, too fond of stories, and perhaps I am. But I have left a loaf and a dish of milk on the stone every evening since, and every morning the dish is licked clean and the loaf is gone, and there are marks in the mud like the drag of a long tail, curling round at the end like a full stop that has changed its mind.

Come home at Michaelmas if you can get leave. Bring the good knife, the one you sharpen on Sundays, and nothing that clanks. I want to see whether it will look at you the way it looked at me. Your loving sister, Ada.
