Stylised turtle design with spiral flippers

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a turtle seen from above, with a round shell containing four teardrop shapes around a central point. The flippers are drawn as curling spirals at each corner. The linework is dark brown and even, with the shell partly filled with fine stippled shading and the rest left as open outline on a plain white background.

Mrs Okonedo told me to mind the pot, the only thing on that trawler not leaking, so I lifted it off the ring before the swell could take it. We were four days out of Lerwick with a hold full of haddock and a galley that rolled like a drunk man on a ladder.

The turtle came up in the net on the third morning, a green one the size of a dinner tray, its flippers curled tight as fern heads. Nobody knew what to do with it. The skipper wanted it gutted for stock. Mrs Okonedo said a creature that carried its own roof deserved some manners, so she cut the twine herself, one strand at a time, while the deckhands grumbled about the price of fuel.

I kept the shell cool in a bucket of seawater on the galley floor and traced the pattern on its back with my thumb while the boat pitched. Four teardrops turning round a middle point, like petals that had decided to go somewhere else. Mrs Okonedo said that was how the sea signed its letters.

We let it go off the stern at dusk, flippers working slowly in the grey water, the way a man turns a key he has not used in years. The skipper said nothing. Mrs Okonedo handed me a tin of ginger biscuits and told me to eat the broken ones, which is how I knew she was pleased.
