Stylised wave tattoo across shoulder and upper arm

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows stylised curling waves built from many thin, parallel black lines that taper and swell across the shoulder and down the upper arm. The linework is fine and even, with the shading created by line density rather than solid fills, and the design is entirely black ink on skin. The three panels show the same arm from the front, the side and an angled view, with the design following the curve of the shoulder.

At the end of August the windfalls dropped from the Pell orchard faster than anyone could gather them, and Nan Hosken stopped trying. The trees stood on the lip of the headland, where the grass gave out into air, and every apple that rolled over the edge went down to the sea. The sea took them the way it took everything, without thanks.

Her grandfather had made the arrangement with the water when he was a boy. He walked to the edge at dusk with a basket of the first picking, said the names of the drowned men of the parish one by one, and tipped the apples over. The sea was to have the windfalls and keep its hands off the trees. For sixty years it had kept to that, and the orchard had stayed above the tideline.

That August the sea did not keep to it. Nan woke to a sound like a cart coming up the lane and found the water standing in the lower field, heaped and furrowed, its crests combed over into long grey hair. It had come for the trees themselves. She went down the rows in her nightdress with her grandfather's basket, and she did not say the names. She said her own, then the name of the apple she had always liked best, the Tom Putt, and she set the basket at the cliff's edge and let it go.

By morning the water had drawn back into its lines. The fruit lay across the sand in long curved rows, bright and unbroken, and the trees above were heavy with the next crop. The waves still come in at the foot of the Pell cliffs in the same slow rolls, and on a still evening you can see the apples turning in them like the rows of a ploughed field.
