Back tattoo of a stylised wolf drawn in fine line hatching, with green swirling vines around it, across the upper and middle back.

Stylised wolf across a back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large wolf stands in a lunging pose across the back, its body and flowing mane built from fine, wavy hatched lines. Shading moves from dark grey to lighter tones, with a few red accents near the tail and a leg. Thin green swirls and curls wrap around the animal, and the design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came up the cliff path the week the wind turned, and Mrs Pellow swore it was the same animal that had taken the Hallidays' hens in March. I told her wolves don't keep to a lodging house garden, but I had seen the tracks myself, long and neat, the toes splayed as if someone had pressed a fork into wet sand.

The lodger in the back room, a sign-writer named Albert Penhale, had been painting the wolf for a month without saying why. He worked at my kitchen table with a fine brush and a pot of green gilt, and every curl he laid down he called a current or a wisp of spray. On the Thursday he breathed on the window and drew the beast in the steam, its mane lifting like surf, and I thought he looked afraid of his own hand.

That night I heard the gate and went down in my coat. The wolf stood at the lifeboat slip with the harbour lamp caught in its hair, and the green curls of weed on the slipway seemed to turn with it. It looked back at me once, unhurried, then walked down the stone into the water as though the tide were a floor. Its tracks went on for three steps past the last wet stone and stopped.

In the morning Albert's room was tidy and his paint pot was gone. On the kitchen window the steam had dried, but a single green curl remained in the glass, fine as a hair, and I have not been able to wipe it off.
