Succulent bouquet on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A bouquet of succulent rosettes in green, purple and cream sits with small white flowers and yellow blossoms on the upper back. The leaves and petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine highlights, giving a realistic, painterly finish. Green and purple dominate the colour palette, with a small red ladybird near the lower centre of the arrangement.

Every spring the keeper's daughter carried cuttings up the cliff path in her apron, because the rock below Scarr Head would grow nothing else. Her father called it foolishness. The gulls ate the bread she left on the wall and the wind took the rest, but the houseleeks took hold wherever she pushed them into a crack, fat and grey-green, their rosettes shut tight like small fists.

The lamp had been failing all winter. Oil came by boat when the sea allowed it, and the sea had not allowed it since Michaelmas. Her father sat in the lantern room with his pipe cold in his hand, counting nights. The coal ship from Whitby was overdue, and it would steer by that light or not at all.
On the last clear night she climbed up with a basket. Purple rosettes from the old garden wall went into the cracks beside the lamp housing, then cream-tipped ones from the churchyard, then the small white flowers that grew in the salt grass. A ladybird walked out of the basket onto her wrist, red as a coal. She tipped it gently onto a dark bloom and watched it climb.
Fog came in before dawn, thick as wool. Her father heard a bell out beyond the reef and knew the ship was lost. Then the mate's voice carried up the cliff, shouting that he could see the purple and cream of the headland in the first grey light, and knew the channel by it. By noon the ladybird was back on the wall, sunning itself on a grey leaf, and the keeper's daughter was already counting cuttings for next spring.
