Succulent cluster on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Four succulent rosettes are arranged in a loose cluster across the forearm, with a large green succulent at the centre, a smaller blue one to its right, a teal one below and a red one at the top. Bold black outlines define each leaf, with soft blended shading that lightens toward the edges of the leaves. Small pale speckles of colour are scattered around the cluster, and the tattoo fills the frame against a dark background.

Mrs Pell had the cuttings laid out on yesterday's Wiltshire Times when the frost came down the valley. Four rosettes, each no bigger than a crown piece, their leaves packed tight as a rose that has forgotten it was meant to open. Her nephew had brought them from a Bristol nursery that was closing, and he wanted them gone before the lorry came for the stock.

'Put them in the sand and leave the lid off,' she told him. 'Succulents don't drown from being forgotten. They drown from being fussed over.' He thought she was joking, which was his mistake. She had kept a red echeveria alive through three house moves and a husband who drove into the gatepost twice. Nobody believed the red one could survive a winter in the glasshouse. The green one, she said, was too proud to die in front of visitors.

By February the frost had got through the glass in two places, and the nephew came out each morning with a torch and a face like a wet bank holiday. The blue one went first, soft at the heart. Mrs Pell cut it down to the firm white base, dusted the wound with sulphur and set it on the windowsill where the sun reached at four. 'Watch,' she said. 'Give a thing enough dry and it learns to hold its breath.'

In April the red rosette had pushed a pink point through its centre. She stood among the cold benches with her coat undone and the teal one resting in her palm, and she counted what had lived.
