The sugar skulls came in the post on Tuesday, all sixteen of them pressed flat between two sheets of card so the icing wouldn't crack. Mrs Adeyemi from number nine sent them over from her sister's bakery in Anfield, and I have pinned the lot above the sink where the steam can't get at them. Mam says they're morbid. I told her they're bows and roses with a bit of sugar on, which is all they are.
You'll laugh at me, but I've been trying to paint one for you. The one with the pink bow tied over its crown, the purple roses fat as cabbages, and a little heart underneath with two crossed bones like a pirate's flag that's had a fright. I've got the outline down in black ink, but the bow keeps going wrong. It comes out looking like a pair of ears. Mrs Adeyemi says it's the fold, and you have to commit to the fold.
Tell the bosun the blue winged one with the cross on its forehead is for him. Ask him to keep it dry, and ask him to keep himself dry.
The ship's due in on the ninth. I'll hang the good one over the door so you can see it from the lane. When you're home, you can tell me which of them you'd have had put on your arm, and I'll believe you if you say the pink one. Love, Nell.
