Sugar skull cat and rose on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black cat with yellow eyes and sugar skull face markings sits above a skeletal ribcage, with a red rose and orange flowers beneath it. Bold black outlines define the forms, with smooth colour shading on the rose petals and leaves. The design is centred on the calf and fills the frame, shown against a blue floor with a black shoe and yellow sock at the bottom.

Doña Ximena swept the marigold petals off the step with the side of her broom and told the girl to stop staring at the cat. Tinta was black from ear to tail, and on the night of the dead she wore her bones painted on in white and rose-red, the way every good cat in Santa Rosalía did, so the souls would know her for one of their own.

That was the night the girl's father had not come home from the salt flats. Everyone said the water had taken him. Tinta sat on the altar between the candles and the bread, yellow eyes fixed on the door, and would not be moved. When the bell at the church struck midnight she jumped down and padded out into the lane, and the girl followed with a lantern because nobody else would.
They walked the cemetery wall until the cat stopped beside a cracked headstone with no name left on it, only a rose carved in one corner. Tinta pressed her face to the stone and purred so loudly the lantern flame shivered. Ximena's hands were shaking by then. In the morning there was a fresh red rose lying on that grave, its petals still wet with dew, and the cat was asleep on the altar with a single grain of salt caught in her whiskers.
