Sugar skull figure with flowers on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm, showing a skeletal female figure with a sugar skull face, a veil and a flower headpiece. The ribcage is shaded in soft greys beneath a row of small skulls strung like a necklace at the lower edge. Bold outlines and grey shading give the design depth against the skin, and the blurred background suggests an outdoor setting.

Dear Tomás,

The marigolds came in on the lorry at gone eleven, so I have been up all night stripping their petals into a bowl, and the whole flat smells like a churchyard in October. Mamá would have scolded me for leaving the window open to the traffic, but the noise from the Calle Donceles is a comfort tonight. Somebody is always singing down there.
I finished the veil for the Señora in the back room this evening. You remember her, the tall figure Papá carved from a fallen balsa branch the year before he went. I stitched the lace the way Mamá taught us, black net over white, with the tiny roses at the crown. The bone-white face is painted and the lips are red as a cut. When I hung her from the rafter the candle caught the pale jaw and she grinned at me, and I laughed out loud, alone at midnight like a madwoman.
The strangest part is the necklace. Mamá always wore one of tiny sugar skulls, six of them, each with its own crooked smile. I could not remember where she kept it, and then this morning I found it in the sewing tin under the spools, wrapped in a handkerchief with your name stitched in the corner. I have strung it round the Señora's bones, just above where her ribs open like a cage, and it is the only thing in the room that looks as if it is waiting for someone.
Come home in November, Tomás. Bring the new paints. I will leave the back door unlatched and the candle lit, and we will see who comes up the stairs to claim the necklace.
Mariana
