Realism tattoo of a woman with red sugar skull face paint, blue eyes and black linework, on the upper arm.

Sugar skull portrait in red on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman with sugar skull face paint looks upwards, with a red sun motif on her forehead and swirling black linework across her cheeks. The face is shaded smoothly in reds and pinks with black accents on the lips, teeth and eye sockets, and her blue eyes stand out against the red. The portrait fills the frame on a curved arm, with a hand resting against her cheek and a darker tattoo visible at the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mamá made me sit on the upturned bucket by the woodstore, because the light in the kitchen has gone yellow since winter and she says red needs daylight to look honest. You will laugh at that, I know. I did not laugh. I held still while she worked cochineal into a dish of lard, and I watched the forest line behind the orchard go dark like a bruise.

She did the swirls first, black and fine as hair, curling from my cheekbones down to the jaw the way bracken uncurls in March. Then the sun on my forehead, a star with too many rays, which she says is the sun that rises over the pass only for the dead. She pressed a thumb under my chin and told me to look up, always up, because the ones who come home look for the sky before they look for the people.

Ines from the post office came with her own pot and painted her hands and laughed too loudly, and we all pretended not to notice how often she touched her face, the way you touch a window to check it is still there. Papá had set the candles along the church wall, and somebody's dog kept barking at the trees as if they owed it money.

I am writing this on the bakery step, where I can see the path you will take if you ever decide to come back. Mamá says you will know the house by the red lantern. Leave your boots at the gate. Look up when you reach the bend, and I will be looking too.
