Realistic colour tattoo of a sugar skull woman framed by skeletal hands and teal scrollwork, with the words Till The End on the neck, on a forearm.

Sugar skull portrait on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman with sugar skull face paint, orange and black ornamental markings around the eyes and a black skull nose, is framed by two skeletal hands and teal scrollwork. The portrait is shaded in smooth, realistic tones, and the words Till The End in script sit across her neck beside a chain. Colour is used for the orange face paint, teal swirls and skin tones, with black for the eye and nose detail, all set on a forearm.

Dear Marisol,

The snow had shut the Paso de la Cruz for nine days, so the carters have been sleeping in the posada with us, and the talk is all of the painter Tomás Rueda, who arrived on the last mule before the storm with a box of pigments and a face he would not let anyone see until it was finished. You will laugh, but he painted it on the inside wall of the chapel, a woman with a sugar skull for a face, her eyes ringed in marigold orange, and two bony hands holding her head as if to keep her from floating off into the blue scrollwork he had swept around her like weather.

Father Anselmo says it is sinful. The muleteers say it is the best thing ever painted in the valley. I asked Tomás why he had written words across her throat, Till the End, and he only shrugged and said it was the promise the living make to the dead, and that the dead hold the other end of it.

Here is what I did not tell anyone. Last night the wind came down the pass like a train, and the candle guttered out, and in the dark I could still see the orange rings glowing. When the storm eased this morning the snow had drifted into the chapel doorway, and someone had swept a path to the wall. The paint was untouched, and the chain at her neck had been picked out in silver leaf that flashed when the light came through the door.

Write to me when the road opens. Tell me whether the teal is still as bright in your town, and whether you still keep my ribbon.

Yours in cold and hope, Inés
