Zombie princess in a thorned oval frame

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A pale, undead woman with long hair and a wide, toothy grin sits within an ornate oval frame, with one wide-eyed face and red blood drips across her body. Bold black outlines and stippled hatching shade the figure and the scrollwork, with a rose and thorny vines at the base and sides. The drawing uses black and grey ink, with red used only for the blood.

Dear Tobias, the rain has not let up since Tuesday, and the market stalls have all gone soft and grey at the edges. I am writing from the back of your old pitch, where the awning still holds, because I cannot sleep and you always said my letters were better than my conversation.

The princess came down the Hollow Road at dusk, the way she does now. The hedge is nothing but splinters since the men cut it back for the wedding that never happened. She still wears the silver circlet her mother gave her, bent a little on one side, and she still carries a single rose stem. Nobody sells roses in this weather, so the traders shut their shutters the moment they saw her. Old Pim dropped his crate of eggs. Nobody was hurt, though the yolks made a mess of the steps.

She did not want eggs or bread. She stood by the fountain, lifted her hand the way a bride would to be given a ring, and waited for someone to bring her the rose she had planted a hundred years before. Nobody moved. Then I did, because I had kept the last cutting in my apron pocket all these years, wrapped in wax paper, and I had never known why.

She took it, pressed it to her lips, and the rain ran pink from the gutters down the hill. By morning the gutters were clean. I went to the fountain at first light and found only the circlet, rain-bright, and a single thorn on the stone. Come home soon. I will keep the kettle on.
