The flower stall at Hallam Road is finally shut for the winter and I have your old tin of seed packets in my coat pocket, the one with the faded robin on the lid. You will want to know the 11.14 was late again. Mr Pritchard, who sells newspapers by the ticket barrier, swears the signal box has a skull painted on its door and says that is why the trains lose their nerve. I told him superstition is a poor timetable.

Still, I went and looked. Behind the signal box somebody had cut back the bindweed, and there was a stone skull half sunk in the ballast, its eye holes packed with coal dust. Round its crown someone had pushed in dahlias and a sprig of rosemary, plus those little pink bramble blossoms that come up in March when nobody expects them. It looked grown there rather than placed. I thought of Dad's allotment and how he always said the dead make the best compost.

I left a jar of marigolds at the base and walked back to the platform. The 4.40 came in with its lamps already lit, and a boy in a green scarf waved at the driver through the glass. I wish you would come up for the spring fair. Bring the good scissors. The skull is still there if you want to see it before the council clears the embankment, and I have saved you a seat by the window.
