Sugar skull with bow on foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A sugar skull tattoo sits on the top of a foot, with a bow at the crown and small flowers filling the skull's face and cheeks. The work uses dark outlines with grey shading and fine detail inside the flowers. The image is black and grey, with the foot resting on a shiny, reflective surface.

The ferry has been cancelled twice, so the tissue paper is damp and the ribbon has to be pressed flat under a jam jar. Your aunt Oriel hands you a brush with three hairs left in it and says the skulls for the harbour chapel will not paint themselves, not in a month of Sundays.

You work at the long trestle by the window, where sea salt has bloomed across the glass. Each skull gets the same order: black line first, then grey where the lamplight would fall, then a rosette of petals pressed into the cheeks. Oriel checks every one with her thumb. 'A bow at the crown,' she says, 'so the dead know someone dressed up for them.'
The last skull is yours. You pencil it three times, and each time the jaw comes out a little more like the face in the bakery window, the man who bought bread the morning the boats stopped. You tie the bow, rub it out with your sleeve, and tie it again in a tighter loop, because that one at least you can get right.
By dusk the rain comes in sideways and the varnish tin on the step catches the lamp. You carry the crate up the hill with tea towels packed between the skulls, counting bows under your breath. At the top the chapel door is open and someone has already lit the candles. Oriel lifts the last skull out and sets it on the step, the varnish shining like wet slate, and says nothing at all, which is how you know she is pleased.
