Sugar skull woman and roses on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic black and grey tattoo of a woman with sugar skull face markings, flowing hair and roses behind her head. A detailed skull and a rose sit below her on the arm. Smooth tonal shading and fine detail give depth, and the image shows a wide view beside a close-up of the same piece.

Dear Tomas,

The roses came up along the harbour wall the week after you sailed, red as the ones Mam kept in the tin vase, and I have been cutting them for the chapel every Sunday because nobody else will climb the wall. Mrs Achterberg says it is bad luck to pick from a wall that holds the sea back. I told her the wall has held for two hundred years and I have never once seen it thank anyone.

Papa's paints are still in the back of the boatshed. I found them on Thursday when the tide took the slip. Under the tarpaulin was the figurehead he carved for the Marigold before the fire, the woman with the lace round her eyes that the fishermen would not look at. He had washed her face in the grey he used for ghosts, then left her unfinished. I have been finishing her. I added the petals at her temples and a small skull in the corner, the way he liked to hide things where only the gulls would see them.

Last night the boats came in early and Captain Renfrew stood on the quay with his cap in his hands, looking up at her. He said nothing for a long time. Then he asked who had made the roses, and I said nobody made them, they just grew where they were put.

Write me back and tell me whether the Azores light is still green. I will keep the lamp lit on the sill until you do. Love, Ada
