Sun and circle hand tattoo designs
Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Flash
A digital illustration of two open hands showing tattoo designs: a solid black sun with a face on each wrist, a black circle with four short crossbars on each palm, and the word DEATH lettered across the fingers. The shapes are flat solid black with no shading, set against pale skin tones. Japanese annotations sit above and below the hands.

The sun on the booth awning has a painted face, and it has been squinting at the crowds on the common since before Mrs Pask bought the stall. Nobody else will touch the wheel after dark, so she hands you the mallet and the brass key and tells you to mind the pins. Five spokes, one letter to each, painted in red along the rim where the pegs strike: D, E, A, T, H. Spin it right and the punters go home with a tin of peaches. Spin it wrong and they go home with nothing at all.

She has run this stall for forty years and claims the wheel remembers where it last stopped. You don't believe her. Then a boy in a flat cap pays his penny and asks for the brass compass he has been eyeing since Tuesday. You give the wheel a hard push. The pointer clatters through the D and the E, rattles past the A and the T, and comes to rest on the one tooth nobody painted, the blank between H and D.
The boy frowns and asks what the blank means. Mrs Pask laughs from her deckchair, a cold pipe between her teeth. "It means you get another go," she says, "and the next one doesn't." You look up at the awning. The painted sun has stopped squinting. It is watching the queue now, patiently, the way a sun watches a field it has already decided to bring in.
