Single fine line running from fingers to forearm

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand with fingers spread is photographed against a plain, pale wall, with a soft shadow falling behind it. Thin, single black lines follow the fingers and then run down the back of the hand and along the forearm, with no shading. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the plain background keeps focus on the line's path across the hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The drowned coast of Hollin Bay had no roads left, only the line the tide drew each morning across the sand. Ottoline Maddox had been sent to fix that line on paper before the Authority stopped paying for paper altogether. She carried a ruler, a bottle of waterproof ink and a nib so fine it snagged on the grain of her notebook.

The old surveyors had measured from the cliff tops, which was why their charts lied. Ottoline went down instead, following the wet edge of the shingle from the lighthouse at Scarrow to the flats beyond the sluice gates. Each evening she stopped where the water had left its mark, and she drew a single unbroken stroke from the furthest reach of the tide up over the rocks, the way a mooring rope runs from a bollard to a sleeping boat, until the ink ran out or the light did.

On the ninth day the stroke ended at a sheet of corrugated iron no one had marked. Beneath it lay a rusted anchor chain, and beside that a child's wellington boot filled with sand. She sat with the notebook on her knee and understood that the line had never been about the sea. It was about where people had stood when the water arrived, and how far they had got before it caught them.

She did not send the chart to the Authority. She tore out the page, folded it into the boot, and walked back along the shingle with the ruler under her arm, the tide coming in behind her at exactly the pace her pen had predicted.
