Small symbol tattoo on finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand forming a circle with the thumb and index finger, set against a plain blue wall. A small black mark, possibly a simple symbol or letter, sits on the side of the middle finger and is shown in fine, solid linework. The image is in colour, with the blue background and pale nail polish contrasting with the skin tones and the dark ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, because the lamps are going out one by one and I'll not shout over a dying generator. You want to know about the Halloran Brothers' Pavilion, the last canvas show left between Carlisle and the sea. Nobody remembers the lion. Nobody remembers the strongman's moustache. What they remember is Dilys on the high wire, and the way she signalled from the top of the rigging by closing her thumb and finger into a ring, a little hoop of air that meant the net was set and she was coming down.

The mark on her middle finger was a sharp fold like lightning caught mid-strike, inked in a back room in Leeds for the price of three packets of cigarettes. Every rigger on that crew knew it by heart. It was the only promise anybody made to her that winter, and it was kept, because the net was always set.

The autumn the canvas rotted, the Brothers sold the poles for scrap and told the town the show was finished. Dilys climbed anyway, on a Thursday, to an empty tent with no net and no crowd. Old Tomas on the ground saw the ring form in the dark and understood it was a question, not an answer. He did not make the gesture back. He lay down on the sawdust instead, arms wide, the only thing he had ever been taught to catch with.

She came down. Nobody has ever agreed on how. Some say she jumped, some say she walked the cable like a bridge. I say she came down slow, because a woman who signs her own safety with a ring of fingers does not fall by accident, and in the morning they found a ring of iron pins in the sawdust, laid out neat as a wedding band.
