Crescent moon with face on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon with a stylised human face in profile sits on the outer thigh, with the face turned to the right. The moon's rim is filled with fine stippled dots and small crater shapes, while the outline and facial features are drawn in solid, clean black lines. The ink is entirely black and grey on a light skin tone, and the photograph is taken at a slight angle with the arm and hand resting in the upper left of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Abernethy kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and that winter the moon came down her chimney every night to warm its hands. Nobody believed her until the Tuesday the coal ran out and the lodgers found the grate full of pale ash shaped like a crescent.

The moon had a long face, turned sideways so it could watch the harbour instead of the rooms. Its rim was pricked all over with small craters, like pepper spilled on a plate, and it had grown tired of being looked at from above. Each night it sat by the range and asked for one thing: a name said aloud before the lamps went out.
Mr Pell, a clerk who had never spoken above a murmur in his life, refused for three nights. On the fourth he said his sister's name, Edith, the one he had left at the station in Bristol and never written to since. The moon smiled with its thin mouth, rose back up the flue lighter than it had come, and the rim caught the lamplight like wet pebbles.
In spring the sea was calm and the coal bill was paid. Mrs Abernethy swept the hearth herself and found a brass button in the ash, stamped with an E. She set it on the windowsill, where the moon could see it from the harbour, and left the lamp burning.
