Matching yin yang mandala tattoos on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms each carry a crescent shaped yin yang design filled with a black linework mandala of flowers and scrolling detail. The right arm's mandala has a pale green wash while the left is in black ink, and the lines are fine and clean. The pair is shown close up with the designs placed side by side, and a hand holds the left wrist at the bottom edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
In the kingdom of Ammary, where the river Tessel bends twice before it reaches the sea, a silversmith named Orla Penhallow was asked by the Queen to make a keepsake for the two daughters of the ferryman. The girls, Bea and Nell, were to be sent to different houses in the hill towns when the snow came, and their mother wanted them to have something that would still fit together when they were apart.

Orla worked nine nights at her bench. She cut two crescents from bright copper, the shape of the moon three days after it goes dark, and pricked a mandala into the face of each with a fine punch, petal by petal, the way her grandmother had drawn lotus rings in the wet sand of the shore. Each curve held its own small sun, one side open and one side closed, so that when the two were laid edge to edge they made a whole round thing with no seam showing.
Bea took hers up the road to the hill towns. Nell kept hers at the ferry house, and every evening she rubbed it with salt and vinegar until the lines stood out sharp. The years went on. The copper turned green at the petals, the way copper does when it lives in the damp, and Nell told anyone who asked that it was the river's colour and she did not mind.
When Bea came back down the road in the spring of the thaw, she said nothing at all. She pushed back her sleeve and laid her forearm against Nell's on the ferry rail, and the two crescents met over the brown water as the boat knocked against the bank. The ferryman said afterwards that he had never seen the girls agree on anything so quickly.
