Sun and moon wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small tattoos sit on the inner wrists: a sun with short rays on the left and a crescent moon on the right. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The black and white photograph is framed close, with the clasped fists and dark hair in view and no face visible.

The ships still come in on the old reckoning. Yesterday a grain barge from Cyrene nearly broke on the Heptastadion because its captain looked for a light that was not there. I stood on the seaward wall with a torch in each fist and waved until my shoulders cracked, and I thought of you up in the tower, counting the hours by the stars the way you taught me when we were small and the nights were ours to lose.
Here is what I want you to know. Last night I dreamed the sun and the moon had swapped places and neither of us minded, and we laughed about it at the well the way we used to. When I woke, the small ring of ink on my wrist was warm, as if it had been pressed to a hearth, and I rubbed at it and thought, she is still watching the same sea, and that is enough to keep my own eyes open.
Come down at the next change if the wind allows. Bring the brass cup, the one with the chipped rim. I will leave the north gate unbarred and the lamp in the window, and when you see it you will know I am already awake.
