Sun and crescent moon outline tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two tattoos are shown: a sun with a plain circular centre and angular rays drawn in a thin black outline on the forearm, and a crescent moon in a single thin black line on the lower back or side. Both designs are simple linework with no shading, filled areas or colour, set against bare skin in an indoor setting with tiled floor and shoes in the background.

By the time the frost reached the gatehouse at Harrowmere, the sun carved above the arch had lost every ray but the stubs. You were the mason sent to mend it, and you told the steward three times that you would cut only the points, not a new face, because the circle was the one part of the old work still sound.

The crescent was the trouble. Someone had cut it low on the eastern wall, where the lady of the house could see it from her window, and nobody living knew who had put it there. Each morning you climbed the scaffold with a wooden mallet and a flask of cold tea, and each morning the moon looked back at you with its thin, patient line, as though it knew how long you had left to finish.
On the ninth day the steward's daughter, Ilse, came up the ladder with bread wrapped in a dishcloth. She asked why the sun and moon were never on the same wall. You told her the builders had kept them apart on purpose, one facing the courtyard and one facing the lake, so that anyone standing between them would never see both at once.
You finished the last ray at dusk. Ilse climbed up to watch, and when the fresh edges caught the last light she turned and found the crescent already rising across the courtyard as the moon lifted over the water. "Now they can see each other," she said. You did not correct her. You simply climbed down and let her keep the view.
