Two matching black fine line infinity knot tattoos on the inner wrists of two people whose hands are clasped together.

Matching infinity knot tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are crossed over each other, each carrying the same black tattoo of interlocked looping lines shaped like a double infinity knot. The linework is even and outlined, with no shading, and the tattoo sits near the wrist crease. The photograph is taken indoors against a plain tiled floor, with the clasped hands at the top of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The Ada Mary put in at Lowestoft on Tuesday with her nets torn to ribbons, so we've been mending them on the quay since dawn. Skipper says the weather will hold for a week, which means he'll have us back at sea by Thursday whether the holds are full or not. I'm writing from the net loft with a needle in one hand and a ball of twine in the other, because I've finally worked out why Dad always tied his mooring line the way he did.

Remember the double loop he showed us on the back step, the one that never slipped and never jammed, where you could follow the rope round and round and come back to where you began? He called it the endless one. I thought it was a trick. Last night Pete Calloway caught me at the bench trying it over and over, and he laughed, then showed me how to lay the twine so the two loops pull against each other and lock. Nothing to it once you see it.

I've been thinking about that on the night watch, the boat rocking, the lamp swinging on its hook. You and me, we always came back to the same place, however far we wandered. I've sent along a length of the good tarred cord, enough for you to practise on the kitchen table. Don't tell Mum it's from the nets; she'll only fret.

Pete's waiting on the bench with the second sail. I'll be home at the end of the month, God willing, and you can show me what you've learned.

Love, Tom
