Three small eye tattoos on hands and wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Three small eye designs are shown in black ink, each with a central iris and dot surrounded by short radiating lashes. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoos sit on separate areas of the hand and wrist. The neutral skin tones and dark fabric in the background keep the focus on the ink.

At the Ashgrove reunion, in the function room of a hotel off the ring road, Joanne Pryce counted the name badges on the trestle table and found one short. She had printed the names herself, in capitals, the way Mrs Hollis used to make them write on exercise books. Sol Brannigan's badge was still in its plastic sleeve, face down, where she had left it.

The three of them had been inseparable in the lower sixth, passing notes under the lab benches and sharing a single pot of Tipp-Ex. One wet Tuesday in Physics they had drawn eyes on each other's hands with a biro, round and watchful, with lashes splayed like the spines of a sea urchin. Ruth said the eyes would stop the teachers creeping up on them. Joanne's had smudged away within a week. Sol's had lasted until the summer, and then Sol had moved to Leeds and stopped answering letters.

Ruth came in late with a gin and tonic and a coat over one arm. She saw Joanne staring at the table and didn't ask. Instead she held up her hand, and there was the eye again, drawn back in fine black lines by a studio on Chapel Street years later, the lashes just as they had been. Joanne showed her own, and they laughed in the way people do when they have made the same decision without telling each other.

Joanne picked up a pen and took Sol's badge out of its sleeve. She wrote the name again, slowly, and beside it she drew a small eye with five short lashes radiating out. Ruth watched her do it, then leaned across and added one more lash at the bottom, as if to keep the eye looking the right way.
