Sun and moon face on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A sun with wavy, pointed rays surrounds a central face that resembles a crescent moon, with closed eyes and a faint smile. The linework is fine and the shading uses grey tones to give an engraved, vintage look. The design is centred on a forearm, with a beaded bracelet and dark cord above it and a teal fabric behind.

Sit closer, you lot, and stop jostling the bread. Yes, that is the sun up there, the one that blisters the skin off a man's back if he dawdles at the well. But I'll tell you what my grandmother told me, and she had it from a potter who had it from the river. The sun in those days had rays like knives, and he wore them to the edge of the sky without a moment's rest. Nobody in the city could sleep for the glare. The goats went mad. The bakers wept into their dough.

Now the moon, Ila, was a silver woman who came out after the sun had gone to bed behind the western hills. She had watched him every evening, glaring and striding, and thought him a dreadful bore. So she climbed the high hill where the potters dig their clay, sat down, and sang at him until the sun's ears went soft.
He came, grumbling. She told him to be quiet and close his eyes. He did, and as he closed them his rays grew long and wavy like the ribbons on a feast day, and his face softened into the shape of her own crescent. He smiled, a little, the way a man does when he's been told a secret he never wanted to hear. That is why, to this day, you can see her face inside his when the light lies low. He is not sleeping. He is listening.
So when your mother tells you to hush at noon, she means the sun. Go on, then. Hush.
