Black line sun and moon design with small stars on the ankle of a foot, resting on white bedsheets.

Sun and moon ankle tattoo

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are crossed on white bedsheets, and one ankle carries a simple black tattoo. The design shows a circle with an inner curved line, short wavy rays and three small five-pointed stars beside it. The thin, even black linework sits on pale skin against a plain white background, with no colour ink.

The tide book lived in a biscuit tin under the ferry office counter, and Ewan Cready had kept it for thirty-one years without once letting a page curl. On the morning the new boy came, he showed him the columns first: high water, low water, the height in feet, the moon's age in a little ringed figure at the margin. "Sun for the day, moon for the night," he said, tapping the pencilled symbols. "Whoever draws them wrong gets the crossing wrong."

The boy, Callum, copied them carefully onto his own slate. He drew the sun as a ring with rays that wobbled the way his hand wobbled, and he put three small stars beside the moon because the book said the moon came with company on clear nights. Ewan looked at it for a long time and said nothing, which Callum had learnt meant approval.

In October a fog sat on the sound for four days. The ferry stayed tied up, and the two men played cards by the stove, counting stars they could not see. On the fifth morning the fog lifted all at once, and there was the island's whole shape, sharp as a cut, with the sun coming up behind the headland.

Ewan took the tide book down to the slipway and stood beside the boy. "Read me the first tide," he said. Callum read it out, every figure in order. Ewan nodded, closed the book, and handed it over. "Now it's yours to get wrong," he said, and walked back up the hill without looking round.
