Small framed design on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare legs are raised against a plain white wall, with the right ankle turned towards the camera. A small tattoo sits on the outer ankle, showing a dark outline design enclosed in a rectangular border. The linework is thin and the ink is black and grey, with the soft, even lighting and clean background keeping the focus on the small tattoo.

The proof came back from the lamp room with a hairline crack running through the frame, and Mr Pryce held it to the window as though daylight might mend it. Three hours before the press run, he said, and not a minute more, because the Post Office had already printed the envelopes that would carry it.

I was nineteen and had been trusted with a graver for exactly four months. I bent over the copper plate with a loupe screwed into my eye and my elbow pinned to the bench, cutting the border back in tiny, patient strokes. The lighthouse was the size of a grain of rice. Inside its lantern, in the finest line I had ever attempted, I found a little bird perched on the ledge that nobody had asked for. It was drawn so small you would need to know it was there to see it.
Pryce said to cut it out. The designer had signed off the lighthouse, not a sparrow. I said the sparrow was in the original drawing and that I would prove it, and he sighed the sigh of a man who had heard that sort of thing from people who were wrong. I went through the drawing with the loupe. The sparrow was there, pencilled so faintly that the reproduction camera had all but swallowed it.
So the bird stayed. The stamps went out in their millions, and nobody I ever met mentioned it. Years later my sister posted me a letter from a seaside town, and the stamp in its corner had a lighthouse on it, with a sparrow on the ledge, small and dark and looking off towards the sea. I held it under the lamp for a long while. Nobody else would ever look that closely, which was rather the point of a frame.
