Yin yang tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on crumpled white bed sheets, with a small solid yin yang symbol tattooed on the outer ankle of the front foot. The symbol is filled with black and light grey ink and has a simple, clean outline. A thin bracelet is worn on the other ankle, and the soft, bright composition keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom, the beck froze solid on Tuesday, so I've been carrying the feed up the long way round in your old boots, which still pinch, and Dad says they'll do me till February if I stop moaning. The hay barn lost two sheets of roofing in the gale. We've propped it with the ladder and a prayer, and Mrs Pryce from the shop says that is how half the county manages.

You'll remember the two ewes in the bottom pen, the one with the dark face and the one all cream. Nobody bought them as a pair. They came off different sales a week apart and somehow ended up sharing the same straw, the cream one curled round the black one like a question that has finally been answered. When the snow came down they never once lay apart. This morning the dark ewe was up by the trough and the pale one was at the gate, and when I went to fetch them both, they waited for each other before they'd move.
I found the old tin in the feed shed while looking for twine. Inside was the chalk disc Granny used to mark the ewes she wanted kept back, a circle split in two, with a dot of each colour sitting in the other's half. She said it meant nobody is ever all one thing, and that the trick was to know which half you were standing in on a given day. I hope the city hasn't talked you out of your stubbornness. Write back, even if it's only a postcard about the weather. Your sister, Nell.
