Sun and stars on ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are crossed on a white bed sheet. One ankle carries a black line tattoo of a circular sun or moon with three small five-pointed stars beside it, and the other ankle carries a sun with wavy rays drawn in simple single lines. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the photo is taken from above with soft, even light.

Dear Priya,

The hall smelled of floor polish and the same squash they served in 1998, and I stood by the trestle table for twenty minutes before I could make myself walk over to you. You were always the one who knew which way the wind was blowing before the teachers did. Forty years on, you still have that look, like you're measuring the room for exits.

Remember the summer we painted the sun and moon on the back wall of the bike shed with Mr Hollis's leftover emulsion? He'd have had us both for it. Yellow for you, because you said the sun was the bossy one and needed the bigger face. Silver for me, because the moon only gets to shine when everyone else has gone to bed. We ran out of paint before the stars, so we did those in biro, three each, crooked as anything.

Last night I found the old tin in my mother's loft. Inside were our pencil stubs, a fold of cinema tickets, and a sheet torn from a maths book with a sun drawn on one side and a crescent on the other, joined by wavy lines that were meant to be rays. Your handwriting is under mine on the back: meet at the bike shed, Friday, bring string.

I never did bring the string, and I am sorry for that. But I have decided I will come to the next one, and I will bring the biro, and we can finish those stars properly. Write back if you can. I will be the one by the squash, pretending not to wait.

Love, Ruth
