Sun outline on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo of a sun shows a plain circle at the centre surrounded by wavy, flame-shaped rays. The linework is a single consistent black line with no shading or fill, and the design sits in the middle of a smooth expanse of skin. The photo is taken from behind and slightly off centre, with a blurred indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the well again by the time Mabel Crane came up the lane with her tin of lamp oil and a face like a shut gate. Nobody in Ashcombe Edge had seen the sun since the second week of October, when the beech wood on the ridge swallowed the last of it and kept it. My father said the wood was greedy. My mother said it was only tall.

I was twelve and the only one who could climb the old oak at the wood's mouth, so the job fell to me. Mabel gave me a pencil stub, a cup of cold tea and a sheet of the good vellum she kept for funerals. Draw it, she said. Draw it the way it was before. I sat on the stile for an hour trying to remember a sun, and found I could only remember the flames: long tongues licking out from a circle that was never quite filled in.

I drew the rays wavy, the way fire moves when there is no wind, and I left the middle bare. Mabel took the sheet, held it up to the grey light, and laughed so hard she had to sit down on the step. The empty circle is the sun, she said. It always was. The fire is just what it does to get out. Then she pinned the drawing above the hearth and blew out her lamp.

That night the wood creaked, and at dawn a thin yellow line lay across the ridge like a dropped ribbon. We have not had a proper summer since, but every door in Ashcombe Edge now has a sun on it, rays flaring, middle left clean. Mabel says that is how you keep the light in: you leave room for it.
