Sun and moon with roses and arrows

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical design shows a sun with a closed-looking open eye on the left and a crescent moon with a face on the right, split by a central point where radiating lines meet. Three roses and three arrows sit around the circle, with fine rays and stippled dots creating shading on the sun and moon. The design is in black ink on a pale background, with the composition centred and evenly balanced.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sun and the moon quarrelled over the same hour, as they always had, until the village elders said the matter would never end unless the two of them were made to share a roof. So a carpenter named Orsa was sent for, and she built a house with a single doorway and no windows, and set the sun in its eastern wall and the moon in its western wall, so that each could look at the other across the rooms but never be in the same light.

For a season this worked. The sun kept its eye open on the valley all day, watching the barley turn gold, and the moon kept its quiet face turned toward the rivers at night, counting the fish. But the roses that grew at the threshold would not be told which side of the house they belonged to. Every morning they leaned east and every evening they leaned west, and Orsa, who had grown tired of cutting them back, finally asked the sun what it wanted from the flowers.

The sun said nothing. The moon, which had been listening through the stone, said only that it would like to be looked at without being squinted at. Orsa laughed and fitted a bronze plate between the two walls, polished so bright that each could see its reflection and the other's face at once. Three arrows she set above the door, pointing out to the hills where the men were still hunting, so that anyone who came home by starlight would know which way was home. The sun, they say, has kept its eye on the roof ever since, and the moon has never once stopped smiling at it.
