Small star tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand with a small solid black five-pointed star and two tiny dots on the wrist. The tattoo is crisp and simple, with flat black ink and no shading. The soft, blurred background and warm tones give the photo a shallow depth of field, with the tattoo as the sharp focal point.

Mab had carried the bucket up the hill for three summers before the star came down into the well at Harrow Keep, and nobody in the village believed her when she said so. So when the water rose one March morning, bright as a struck coin, she went alone with the rope and her lantern.

The star was no bigger than a thumbnail, dark as slate, and it lay on the stones like something dropped and forgotten. Two smaller specks sat beside it, round and scorched. Mab knelt, expecting heat, and found only cold. "You're a long way from your sky," she told it, and it seemed to her the specks shifted closer, the way ducklings do when their mother calls.
She carried them down in her apron. The miller's wife said the star was a bad omen and the vicar said it was only a stone, but Mab set it on the schoolroom windowsill where the light came through at noon, and each day it threw a small shadow shaped like a point. By midsummer the specks had drifted to its edges, one on each side, as though keeping watch.
When the surveyors came to pull down the last wall for the new road, they found the keep empty and the well full of starlight. Mab kept the star. She kept it until she was old, and then she gave it to the child who first asked her where the sky went at dawn.
