Fine line tattoo design of four small black icons in a row: a sun, three wavy lines, a mountain and a cross, on a plain light grey background.

Sun, waves, mountain and cross line icons

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

Four small black symbols sit in a horizontal row: a circle with a horizontal bar and dots around it representing a sun, three wavy lines for water, a peaked mountain with a dot beneath, and a Latin cross with a dot on each side of the crossbar. The lines are uniform and thin, with no shading, and the design is shown in solid black on a pale grey background. It is a drawing of a design rather than a photograph of skin, so no placement is shown.

The hatch refused Dorrit's hand for the third time, and she stood on the ladder counting rungs to keep her hands from shaking. Beyond the viewport the grey shoulder of the moon turned slowly, and the air lock of Kestrel Works hummed through its old seals as if it had heard her swear.

The four glyphs were older than the station. Her grandmother, a surveyor on the ice farms of Ceres, had taught her what they meant: the sun circle for the day shift, the waves for water to be rationed, the peaked mountain for a shelter with a working stove, and the cross for a grave you left alone. Nobody read the old signs any more. Dorrit read them every morning on the wall of the hydroponics bay, tracing each line with a gloved finger until the pattern felt less like writing and more like a route.

The hatch opened on the fourth try. Behind it was no shelter but a narrow corridor lined with seed drawers, each labelled in her grandmother's cramped hand. Someone had painted the same four symbols beside the last drawer, and beneath the cross a bead of blue paint had dried into a dot. Dorrit pulled the drawer open. Inside lay a packet of barley and a folded note: the water is under the mountain, and the sun comes back every morning if you wait for it.

She laughed, and the sound ran down the corridor like a dropped spanner. Then she tucked the barley inside her suit, stepped out of the lamplight and into the dark, and went looking for the water.
