Sun, waves, mountain and cross symbols
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
Four small, separate symbols sit in a row on a plain light grey background: a circle with dotted rays and a horizontal bar, three wavy lines, a mountain-like peak with dots, and a simple upright cross with dots. The linework is uniform, thin and solid black, with no shading. The composition is centred and sparse, with wide empty space around the motifs.

Dear Tomas,

The post boat came in on Tuesday with your letter folded inside the flour sack, so Mrs Ruadh says, and I have read it at the window until the ink went soft. You ask whether the path is still the same. It is. Your uncle has repainted the marks on the stones, though he has got the sun the wrong way round again, its rays pointing inward as if it is trying to get back indoors.
Go down from the harbour wall and you will meet them in order. First the sun, a ring with a bar across its middle where the light goes thin at dawn. Then the three waves, which the old men insist are not waves at all but the three times the ferry was late. Then the mountain with its little dots of snow, and under it the rule your grandfather made us swear to: never take the high road in fog. Last of all the cross, plain and upright, at the place where the track gives up and the chapel begins.
I walked it on Sunday, slowly, for my knees. At the mountain I stood a long while because the fog had come off the water and was sitting on the peak like a broody hen. I thought of you on the far side of the sea, reading the same four marks in a city that has none. Then the sun broke through and lit the cross, and the chapel door was open for the first time since winter.
Come home when the dots are fresh, or don't. The stones will still be here either way. Leave your boots at the wall and I will keep the kettle on.
