Dear Ruth, the apples came in early this year, all of them at once, as if the trees had made a bet with the weather. Dad would have had the ladders out by six. I've had them out since Tuesday and I still can't get the Bramleys down before the wasps find them. Walter from the next holding says the sun has been sulking behind the hill since June, so the fruit is sweeter for the wait. I told him that's the sort of thing men say when they want to be right.

I found the old cider press under the tarpaulin in the far shed, and on its wooden beam, cut deep with a penknife, was a face inside a ring of rays. Dad must have carved it the summer before the war, one long wavy spike for every hour of light. The eyes are lopsided, one squinting the way he squinted at the sky to judge rain. I have been pressing apples under that face every afternoon and it has been, I'm sure of it, smirking at me.

Last night a storm came over the ridge and the lane flooded. I sat in the press house with a lamp and a bottle of last year's cider and waited for the rain to stop. When the clouds broke, the low sun came straight through the open door and lit the carving so the rays threw shadows across the flagstones. For a minute the thing looked alive, as if it had been waiting all along for someone to notice it was there.

I'm not selling the orchard. I've decided that. Come up at the weekend and help me strip the beam, and bring your good knife. We'll see whether the old fellow wants to stay.

Love, Margaret
