Sunflower and pansy bouquet design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a dense bouquet of two large sunflowers and several pansy-like blooms, with smaller buds, stems and leaves arranged around the edges. The linework is detailed and fine, with petals and leaves shaded by hatching and the sunflower centres filled with dense dots. The drawing is in black ink on a plain white background, with the composition centred and no body placement shown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Walter had the two tallest sunflowers staked against the shed wall by seven, before the lads came up the back lane with their bike clips and their snap tins. Overnight the wind had carried the screen dust over from the colliery tip, and every leaf wore a grey skin of it. He went along them with a damp cloth, one leaf at a time, the way his mother had done the front step on a Friday, and did not hurry, because the show judges were not due until noon and the hooter had not yet gone.

Irene had grown the pansies in the border by the gate. She called them faces and talked to them while she deadheaded, and Walter had never once told her it was daft. Since the spring they had gone wild, purple and yellow spilling over the bricks, and he left them as they were. He had not been able to bring himself to tidy them, the same way he had not been able to move her chair away from the window.

The judges came at twelve in a Ford with a cracked windscreen, and Mr Gallagher from the club stooped over the larger sunflower with a magnifying glass the size of a saucer. He found the ring of dust at the heart of the bloom, where the seeds were thickest, and straightened up with a look Walter knew well from the pit office. Walter said nothing. He pulled the head down towards him, blew once across the dark disc, and watched the grey lift off into the August light like a small smoke.

The rosette went to Walter that afternoon, blue, with a card that said Best in Show. He pinned it to the gatepost beside the pansies, and when the hooter finally sounded from the top of the hill, both big heads of the sunflowers had swung round, slowly, to face the winding wheel.
