The rain came sideways off the river at Carrow market, and Nell Ashby kept her sunflowers under a tarpaulin that cracked like a sail every time the wind changed its mind. Nobody bought flowers in weather like that. She sold them anyway. Her grandmother had done the same, and her grandmother had told her that a sunflower turns its whole head toward wherever the light has gone, so you must never let one stand in the dark for long.

On the third Saturday of the wet, a stranger stopped at her stall. He wore a coat too thin for the season and asked for the tallest bloom she had. She cut the stem with her knife, wrapped the root in newspaper, and asked what the flower was for. He said it was for a woman who had stopped answering his letters. Nell said that was a poor reason to buy the best thing she had. He agreed, and paid double anyway.

Three days later the rain stopped. Nell was packing up when the same man came back, dry for once, and stood in the puddles without caring where his boots went. The woman had written after all, he said, one line only, and he read it to her from a folded scrap: come and see the garden. He had brought the sunflower back with its head bent low and its petals gone the colour of old brass. Nell took it, turned it to the thin sun breaking over the car park, and watched it lift its face again, slowly, as if it had remembered something.
