Sunflower tattoo on the thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower fills most of the frame, with yellow and orange petals outlined in dark line and a shaded brown and black centre built from stippled dots. The petals have soft gradients from pale yellow to deeper orange, giving the flower volume. The tattoo sits on smooth skin, with a blue phone case and dark fabric visible at the top edge of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sunflowers in Caddon Vale were never meant to face the palace windows, and the head gardener said so every morning, yet every morning the great yellow heads had swung round in the night like a row of sleepers rolling towards a warm hearth. Orla Penning, the seed-keeper's daughter, had long since stopped correcting them. She had a basket of black seeds on her hip and a list in her head of the things she had been told not to do, and the first on the list was carrying flowers up the tower stairs.

Prince Aldric had been kept in the tower since the spring frost, when he had refused to marry the Duke's cousin and said so at table. The chamberlain called it a fever of the mind. The cook called it good sense. Orla called it nothing, because she was not permitted to call anything, and so she climbed the four hundred and twelve steps with a cut flower under her arm, its stalk wrapped in wet linen, and set it on the sill of the narrow window where the prince sat counting bread crusts.

He looked at the flower for a long time. Then he looked at her, and then he laughed, a short surprised sound like a gate latch. "It has been turning towards me all week," he said. "I thought it was only the cold."

By dusk the head had swung on its thick stalk until its petals pointed at the stairwell door, where Orla stood with her basket. She understood then that the flowers had never been following the sun at all. They had been following whoever climbed the steps. Before she left, the prince pressed a single seed into her palm and closed her fingers over it. "Plant that where the wind is kind," he said, "and see who comes looking for it."
