Sunflower bouquet in a vase on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bouquet of orange sunflowers, small red flowers and dark green leaves rises from a striped vase tattooed on the outer forearm. Bold black outlines and flat solid fills define the petals, leaves and vase, with the vase decorated with red and green bands and a pointed arched panel. The vivid palette of orange, red, green and yellow dominates the composition, which is shown from a close angle with the wearer's jeans and shirt partly visible at the edge.

Dear Tom, The sunflowers you left in the grey jug came up by the back wall the week after you sailed, which I took as a sign of something, though Mrs Pryce says it's only that the seed was old and sprouted out of spite. They are taller than the shed now. Every morning I stand under them with my tea and count the heads, and every morning there is one more face turned towards the kitchen window, as if it wants to see who is still at the sink.

I have been selling the small red flowers at the Saturday market, the ones that came up alongside the sunflowers as a sort of spare crop. Mr Gaunt at the fishmonger's took a bunch for his wife and paid me in pennies and a cod's head, which I have not yet decided what to do with. The jug has gone to the market too, with its band of red and green and the little arched panel where Dad used to paint a boat. I kept the lid.
Here is the news that matters. I have saved two dozen heads and dried them on newspaper on the mantel, and when the frost is gone I will put them in the ground by the wall, the way you asked. You said a sunflower follows the sun all day and forgets it at night, and I told you that was nonsense. I have watched them since. They forget nothing.
Come home by the back wall, not the road. I'll leave the gate on the latch. Your loving sister, Nell.
