Teal mandala flower and vines on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large mandala-style flower dominates the upper arm, with teal petals edged in dark outlines, a yellow centre ringed with red and white, and purple accents. Green leaves and black linework vines sit beneath it, while faded grey floral shading appears at the top left of the arm. The bold colour is set against a plain grey top and a dark background, with the design filling most of the frame.

Mind the teal pot there, lad, it's the good one, ground from the blue stone of the old sea wall. Brother Osric would have your hand off for dipping a brush in it with a cough. Now listen, because this is the part the chronicle leaves out.

Osric was given one winter to paint the great rose for the chapter house. The abbot wanted a flower that opened like a clock, petals in rings, nothing wasted. Osric worked by a window the wind kept trying to shut. Each morning he drew the outer petals in black ink, and each morning the vines he'd sketched beneath them had crept a finger's width further across the vellum, as if the plants had grown while he slept.
On the last night of Advent he found the centre would not sit still. The yellow kept bleeding into the red ring, and the white dots would not stay in their places. He laid his head on the desk until the candle guttered, and when he woke the petals were filled in by someone else's hand, steady and small, in a green so deep it looked wet.
Nobody in the house admitted to it. The abbot said the flower was finished and the finest thing in the county. Osric never painted another one. Some say he walked down to the coast and drew the same bloom in the wet sand for the fishermen's children, and that the tide has never once taken it.
