The lift at Harrow Point had been broken since March, so Ada Mensah carried the bag of compost up eleven flights on her hip, stopping on every landing to let the ache pass. At the top she tipped the compost into a paint tin someone had left on the balcony rail and pushed in the seed that had fallen from the bird feeder that spring. Nobody expected anything from it. By August there were two heads on the stalk, each as wide as a dinner plate, and they stood taller than the railing.

The neighbours came up to look. The old men on the ninth floor said a sunflower follows the sun from morning to night, and that the sun had only ever bothered with the east face of the tower. The children counted the petals and argued about whether the dark middles were eyes or seed heads. Mr Doyle, the caretaker, wanted the thing down for the sake of the fire exit, and Ada told him the fire exit had been blocked by his own bicycle since Easter, so he could carry it himself if he was so worried.

The heads turned all day, east to west, and each evening they bowed down over the rail towards the north side, where the flats never saw the sun at all. Ada noticed it first, and then Mrs Kaur on the fourth floor noticed it, and by the first frost there were forty tins on the sills of the north stairwell, each with a seedling leaning out into the light that came in over the car park. Nobody had told the tower to face the sun. It did it anyway, one window at a time.
