Sunflower dreamcatcher on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a looped web of black lines sits on the thigh, with two yellow sunflowers and green leaves overlapping its right side. Three shaded grey feathers hang from the bottom of the hoop on cords. The sunflowers use soft colour shading, while the web and feather outlines are in black, with grey tones on the feathers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper's wife on Skerrow Rock had no garden, only salt, gulls and a bare slab of granite, so when the supply boat came in March she asked the mate for seed. He laughed and gave her a paper packet from a Hull grocer, the last of the sunflower seed, and told her nothing would come up in that wind.

She sowed them in a tin bath lined with turf hauled up in sacks. They grew crooked and stubborn, and every evening when the lens began to turn, the heads swung round after it like children following a lamplighter. Tam said it was foolishness. He still tied the stalks to the railing with twine when the gales came in.

Over the bed hung her mother's hoop of willow, strung with a web of waxed line. Three grey gull feathers, found drowned on the step, dangled from its base on cords. The wife said they caught the bad dreams before they reached the sleeper, and Tam, who did not believe in dreams, let them stay.

In October the fog came down thick as wool and stayed a week. The oil ran low and Tam took a fever in his chest. She climbed the iron stair with the hoop under her arm, wound the clockwork by hand until dawn, and kept the beam sweeping. When the fog lifted, the Brannoch lay safe in the bay, and the sunflowers had bent every head towards the sea, heavy with seed, as if they had been keeping watch too.
