Sunflower tattoo on the side ribs

Traditional · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower fills most of the frame, with layered yellow and orange petals edged in black outline and a dark brown, shaded centre. The petals show light and darker tones that suggest depth, and the flower sits on bare skin against a plain background. The photograph is taken at a close angle with soft lighting.

The sack of seed came aboard at Bilbao wedged between a crate of oranges and a deckhand's guitar, and by the time you had scrubbed the onion smell from the galley sink, half of it had gone soft in the damp. You kept the good half in a biscuit tin on the shelf above the range, where the heat could reach it, and told nobody why.

Three weeks out, somewhere past Finisterre, the first green shoot pushed up through a bucket of potato peelings you had been meaning to tip over the side. Donal, who had been sick in the scuppers since Hull, came down for a cup of tea and stared at it as though it had broken a rule. You told him it was a tomato. He did not believe you, and neither did the mate when he came in for his bacon and saw the stalk leaning towards the porthole.

It leaned all week. Every time the ship came round, the stalk came round after it, feeling for the light the way a navigator feels for a star. By the time the sky cleared over the Gulf of Lion, the head had opened into a ring of yellow as wide as a dinner plate. The centre was dark and close-packed, like the bottom of a coffee tin, and the petals caught the lamp so the whole galley looked lit from inside.

On the last night you cut it at the stem and carried it up to the wheelhouse on a tray. Donal took one look and went red to the ears. You set it in the chart-table jar, and the watch officer, who had never once in your acquaintance looked up from his charts, looked up.
