Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo

A sunflower is tattooed on the chest directly beneath the breasts, with a dark brown centre stippled in dotwork and yellow and orange petals fanning outward. The petals have dark outlines and soft shading. The photo is framed tightly on the torso, with the fabric held up at the sides.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad never let anybody pick the seed heads before the first frost. He said the birds would strip them in a day, and that the tallest ones were the ones that had been talked to. I thought he was joking until the summer I moved us into the flat above the chippy on Harrow Street, when the only green thing left was a square of earth behind the bins.

I planted six seeds from a paper bag he had kept in his coat since March. Four came up. The biggest opened in the last week of June, on a night too hot to sleep, while a drunk outside the bus shelter sang Dusty Springfield to nobody. I sat on the back step with a torch and counted its leaves. Its head was a dark brown dome, dense and dotted like a sieve, with yellow rays fanning out around it as if someone had opened an umbrella in the middle of a car park.

After each shift at the hospital laundry I took a jam jar of water down and checked on it. Some nights it had turned toward the streetlamp rather than the moon, which Dad would have said meant it was lonely. Some nights it had turned back. By August the centre had filled with seeds, and I understood that the whole point of the thing was what it kept inside.

When the frost finally came I cut the head off with his old bread knife, carried it up four flights, and laid it on the kitchen table to dry. I rubbed out a spoonful of seeds into an envelope addressed to my brother in Kirkcaldy, who had never once asked me for anything. I posted it before I could change my mind.
