Black and grey roses in an inverted triangle

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

An inverted triangle outlined in solid black contains three shaded roses and several leaves. The roses are rendered with soft grey shading and fine detail in the petals, while the leaves have crisp linework. The image is in black and grey, with the tattoo centred on the skin and the top edge of a dark garment visible above it.

Sit closer, the lamp is failing and I won't waste the oil on you pretending you've heard this one. Out past the Salt Terraces, where the old rail line ran, there stood a seed house the surveyors called Number Nine, with a door cut in the shape of a bowl turned upside down. Hanne Vasey kept its keys. She was the last glasshouse keeper left in the valley, and everyone said she had no patience for anything that wouldn't feed a family.

Then one wet spring she found three rose cuttings in the silt beneath the drain grate, still green under the bark, each one rooted in a cracked teacup. She carried them up inside her coat like kittens. The rain came sideways that year and the leaves kept turning the wrong way to the sun. With the only scrap iron she could spare, she bent a triangle, point down, and tied the canes to it so the roses hung into the frame like water running out of a sink.

The council wanted that iron for hinges. Hanne stood in front of the frame and told them a rose is only as good as the leaves that catch what light falls on it, and she pointed at the veins, fine as pencil lines on a survey map. They let her keep it until the frost. All winter she sat with the blooms, and each morning another ring of petals had opened, grey as old rain, heavier at the bottom than the top.

When the council's barrow came for the iron in the thaw, Hanne had gone to the coast and never returned. What they found was the frame still standing, and the lowest rose open wide and facing the door, as if it had been waiting to be noticed. So when you see something hung upside down that still insists on blooming, you know whose hands did that. Now the lamp's out. Go on home before the frost.
