Sunflower tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sunflower with layered, outlined petals fills most of the frame, with a dark, stippled centre surrounded by fine dots that give it depth. The linework is crisp and even, and the petals are shaded with light grey and fine hatching. The design is centred on pale skin against a plain dark background, with a striped fabric sleeve at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The radiator had boiled dry somewhere past the cattle grid, so I was walking the shoulder of Cutter Flats Road with a jerrycan that sloshed louder than my boots. Heat came up off the tarmac in sheets. Ahead, a farm stand leaned against a fence post, and behind it, as far as I could see, the sunflowers stood in rows like a choir that had forgotten the words.

Ruth Calloway ran the stand. She had a tin for coins and a hat that had been white once, and she didn't look up from her crossword when I asked for water. "Heads face east in the morning," she said, as if I'd asked. "They follow the sun across the day, then swing back in the dark. Dad reckoned they were watching the road for whoever was late."

"Are they finished?" I asked, looking at the drooping faces, their centres dark as ink dropped on paper.

"Finished when they stop turning. Then they look at the ground." She pointed with her pencil at one blackened head bowed into the dust. "That one's done. Want it?"

I should have said no. Instead I took the broken head, heavy and rough as a hairbrush, and she charged me nothing but a promise to come back at harvest and tell her what I'd seen. I rode the rest of the way with it on the passenger seat, its spiked petals fanned toward the windscreen, and every few miles I glanced across to see it still faced the way I was going.
